Feeding Community: A Collaboration Between OU Artists and Athens' Regional Food Producers.

2012

In recognition of the vital role that local food production, local economies, and the arts play in creating diverse and sustainable communities, and in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Athens Farmers' Market and the 75th anniversary of Ohio University's College of Fine Arts, a group of artists and writers converged to work with local food producers in order to create an interdisciplinary, collaborative book.

During spring 2012, papermaking and literary artists affiliated with Ohio University met with six regional food producers, whose businesses and lives ultimately inspired the book's design and content. The pages are created with materials found on these regional farms and mills, as well as recycled fabric donated by the theatre department and recycled printmaking papers collected from the School of Art.

The project was funded in part by an Arts for Ohio's Arts Partnership Grant, which brought in two visiting artists to help implement the project.

The project was designed to celebrate our unique community as well as to engage students with the place in which they live and study. Our hope with this book is to inspire further collaboration between not only Ohio University and the Athens community but also artists of all kinds. May we continue to ask where our food comes from, and--better yet--may we know who grows our food.
